Right selection of OS.
Most major systems in the world - Microsoft Windows and UNIX based OSes.
Ask Microsoft guru - what is the best? "Of course, Microsoft Windows Server!". Ask UNIX guru the same - you will hear absolutely different answer. Let me explain some things, since I have very strong skills in both.
Windows. The best for ASP/VBA projects. UNIX - very stable (see below) system. One of these systems should satisfy your needs.
About stability - right sysadmin person can make your system protected from attacks, regular file system dump can help you in case data lost, and modern security protocols can protect your information. But, if someone haves physical access to your server - he can do everything.
In world about 10-15 different Unix OSes. BSD, Linux, few Realtime OSes, Mac OS, etc. I'm work with a lot of Linux clones (Slackware, RedHat, mandrake, alt Linux, Debian,etc) - I don't see big difference between these Linux OSes. Same kernels, same library... difference only in installer and packages set.
Next one - BSD family. 3 major childes Free BSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD.
Free BSD is much modern than two another. OpenBSD - the best in security. My vote for OpenBSD.
Anyway, last (and first!!!) question should be - what you want from your server? Controlled by few mouse movements? Windows!
Ask Google for percentage information - how many servers uses Windows?
And how many Apache versus IIS?
