Lets talk about DataBase engines
mySQL, Postgress, Sybase, Interbase, MS Access, MSSQL, Oracle - what is your choice?
- mySQL
Pluses:
- Zero cost.
- multi platform/multi OS
- lightspeed on middle size data.
Minuses:
- Free Software. No commercial support.
- PostgreSQL
Pluses:
- Zero cost.
- Support for for 'foregn keys', triggers, cursors.
- Powerfull engine with transaction system.
Minuses:
- Free Software. No commercial support.
- Sybase
I spent long time while develop big project on Sybase ASE 11.9.2
Pluses:
- Support for for 'foregn keys', triggers, cursors.
- Powerfull engine with transaction system.
- Commercial support.
Minuses:
- Low speed on middle range data.
- Interbase
I don't have good expirience with Intrerbase for disscuss about + and - of this engine.
- MS Access
If you develop serious web application - forgot this engine. Really!. Good for small desktop allication.
- MS SQL
Born from Sybase. Very fast. But Windows Server requred.
Minuses:
- High cost.
- Oracle
Light speed on really big data.
Working under Windows/Linux.
Minuses:
- Pretty high cost.
Summary:
For small projects - use mySQL.
For middle project - postgreSQL.
For big projects - Oracle.
If you care about data integrety check - postgreSQL or MSSQL or Oracle.
If you plan use Windows server - think about MSSQL or Oracle.
